Baby Items clearanced at Target

Check out the end caps in the baby aisle at Target - they have lots of baby lotions and soap on clearance. Off the top of my head, I recall a large bottle of baby Aveeno for $4.00 (and I know there have been a lot of Aveeno baby coupons floating around out there). I also saw Motts fo Tots Applesauce for $1.69 for a 6-pack...although, on Target's website (go HERE), I believe there is a $1.00 off coupon...making them only $0.69 each.

Pack Of 3 Magnetic Sensor Automatic White LED Drawer Closet Light - FREE (with $3.99 shipping)

These are the coolest. They just stick ANYWHERE and have a pretty wide range of light.

I don't have a single ceiling light in my house (except in the kitchen), so these are nice to put in closests, drawers, etc. Any time the magnet separates more than an inch, it turns on...and no electricity!

Today's Mail

Remember the free popcorn I mentioned in my PREVIOUS BLOG? I got it in the mail today with all the coupon extras! Guess being sick will be healed with my free Redbox rental and free Orville!

Also, I got my FREE 13oz bottle of Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce (that I mentioned HERE and HERE.

The Charmin extender came (pretty neat) that I mentioned HERE.

And my personal favorite...the weekender kit I mentioned HERE.

Spinach & Chicken Saute

So, with the $0.97/lb Chicken Breasts I got, I made the following last night and have to say it was DELICIOUS!

Spinach & Chicken Saute
6 boneless skinless chicken breast (1 3/4 lbs)
1 cup fat-free (skim) milk
1/2 cup fat-free chicken broth
1 medium onion, chopped (1/2 cup)
1 bag (10 ounces) washed fresh spinach, chopped
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1. Remove fat from chicken. Spray 12-inch nonstick skillet with cooking spray; heat over medium heat. Cook chicken in skillet 2 minutes on each side; reduce heat to medium-low. Stir in milk, broth and onion. Cook about 5 minutes, turning chicken occasionally, until onion is tender.

2. Stir in spinach. Cook 3 to 4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until spinach is completely wilted and juice of chicken is no longer pink when centers of thickest pieces are cut. Remove chicken from skillet; keep warm.

3. Increase heat to medium. Cook spinach mixture about 3 minutes or until liquid has almost evaporated. Stir in salt, pepper and nutmeg. Serve chicken on spinach.

Makes six 1-cup servings.

On a side note: I served with white rice and buttermilk biscuits...YUM

Save Money on Paper Towels

When you're microwaving something, use a coffee filter instead of a paper towel to cover the dish as they're cheaper!

The only reason I even came up with this solution is because I realized how much paper towels are in comparison with napkins, etc. Then I realized the OVERABUNDANT AMOUNT of coffee filters we have (Jason, I know you drink coffee, but NO NEED FOR 10,000 COFFEE FILTERS TAKING UP SPACE IN OUR KITCHEN CABINETS).

ANOTHER Free Sample of Betty Crocker Warm Delights (in-store)

I went to Dominick's the other day and there was a large display near the eggs filled with single-serve boxes of Warm Delights and a sign that said "free with your club card". I threw it in my card and sure enough, it rang up for $0.00. So keep your eyes out for this display in your store!

50 Ways to Save on Pet Expenses

Ask any pet owner and they’ll tell you the love and companionship of a pet is priceless...unfortunately, caring for them is quite expensive.

If you are looking to bring a new animal companion into your life or already have a few furry friends, here are 50 ways to keep both them and your wallet happy.

Finding Your New Friend

1) Avoid pet stores like the plague, their pets are overpriced and come from disreputable sources.

2) Adopt from a shelter or rescue, you can even find specific breeds for adoption. Check out Petfinder.com for pets near you.

3) Adopt an adult cat or dog. Puppies and kittens require a series of vaccinations, spaying or neutering and housebreaking.

4) If you insist on a purebred puppy or kitten, only buy from a reputable breeder. Reputable breeders are ones who are active in the dog or cat community, do health testing on their breeding stock and offspring, do not advertise in the newspaper or craigslist, offer lifetime support and have a welcome home policy if you cannot keep your pet.

5) In general, smaller is cheaper. The price for medications and veterinary care often depends on your pet’s size. A smaller dog eats less, costs less to board etc.

6) Fish require more money and time than you might imagine. The start up costs are high and you have to pay close attention to your fishes environment or they will perish.

Around the Home

7) Check craigslist for used dog crates, unwanted kitty condos, aquariums or bird cages.

8) Protect your house, destructive dogs need to be crated when you’re not home. This will save damage to your stuff and keep Fido from needing emergency surgery after eating the couch.

9) Protect your dog or cat, just as you would baby proof your home look for in home dangers to your pet like cleaners and poisons. Certain houseplants are poisonous too, check out the SPCA’s list of toxic and non toxic plants. Trust me, my grandmother STILL has my poinsettia's from my wedding because my furry friends will die if they eat them.

10) Fence your yard, this will keep Fido safe and not out running in the street.

11) Buy a crate sized for when your puppy reaches adulthood, use a box or divider to make it smaller for housebreaking.

12) Keep your kitty indoors, outdoor cats are more likely to get injured or sick and require additional vaccinations. Again, my furry friends LOVE to 'go at it' with other animals that enter the yard...VERY costly.

13) Make your own dog or cat bed, there are patterns online to guide you. Don't want to make your own? I have found some amazing deals on pet beds at Menards.

14) Dog beds are nice but your pooch will be just as happy with an old towel or blanket. Old pillows are also good.

Toys and Supplies

15) Go to a tennis court and collect abandoned tennis balls. This is Diesel's FAVORITE toys.

16) Tie a knot in an old sock. One of my dogs has a huge sock fetish. Be careful though, my friend Sarah's dog (Boxer) swallowed the sock whole!

17) Buy stuffed animals from the dollar store or thrift store, make sure there are no plastic eyes or other pieces that could be chewed off and swallowed. And keep an eye out on ANY toys you buy and at the first sign of 'breaking down', throw it away.

18) Make a fleece tug toy - buy fleece fabric remnants and cut into strips. Using 3 strips knot one end together, braid and then knot the other end.

19) Strips of fabric and empty water bottles make great toys.

20) Rolled up bits of newspaper and aluminum foil will keep kitty entertained.

21) Dog.com has good prices on toys. Wait for one of their free shipping offers and load up, dole out new toys over the year. They also have inexpensive pet tags.

22) Don’t spend a lot on stuff puppies and kittens will outgrow like collars, harnesses or clothes. I found my cutest, cheapest, and best quality collars and leashes at the flea market.

23) Use dishes you have on hand for food and water bowls. No need for overpriced bowls from the pet store. Ceramic or stoneware are best, they are durable and don’t cause irritation like some plastic bowls.

24) Buy kitty litter in bulk, it doesn’t go bad.

25) Get a scratching post for your kitty to save your furniture, you can make your own with some wood and carpet or rope.

26) Petedge online has great prices on pet supplies. They mainly sell wholesale so orders less than $60 are hit with a $7 fee, wait till you need a bunch of items or band together with some friends.

Food and Treats

27) Buy food in bulk, store in an airtight container.

28) Costco’s Kirkland pet food is both good quality and affordable. Too bad I don't have a Costco nearby :(

29) Don’t buy cheap kibble to save money, it has poor nutritional value and is loaded with fillers. Read the label, dogs and cats have a limited ability to digest grains, real meat should be the primary ingredient. Costco's dog food has chicken and chicken meal as the first two ingredients, that's a good sign.

30) Dry kibble is cheaper than canned wet food.

31) Grow your own catnip. Tie a little in the end of an old sock for a kitty toy.

32) Bake your own dog biscuits, you can find recipes online.

33) Don’t overfeed your pet, cats and dogs will quickly become obese. Obesity leads to expensive health problems later.

Pet Care

34) Spay or neuter your pet, birthing babies is expensive and it will reduce the risk for certain cancer like mammary tumors.

35) Ask your local animal shelter about low cost spay and neuter options. They normally get the heads up on 'free days' to get your animal spayed or neutered.

36) Look for low cost vaccination clinics. Often the shelter or pet supply stores like Petsmart and Petco will sponsor these clinics.

37) Check out the prices online for medications, flea preventative and heartworm protection. Compare to your vets prices. My favorite is petmeds.com.

38) Don’t skip vaccinating to save money, parvo in particular is very deadly to puppies. Saving a sick puppy or kitten can cost thousands.

39) Don’t skip heartworm preventative. Heart worms are deadly and expensive to treat.

40) Get your pet its annual checkup. Diseases or problems caught early will be cheaper to treat.

41) Ask your vet about any discounts they can offer, they are often willing to work with you if money is tight or may have a special plan for routine care.

42) Be nice to your vet, good customers will receive better care and better discounts. I’ve been given many items for free because we have a good relationship with our vet. Or it might be the loads of money we’ve dropped there already!

43) Look for a vet school in your area, they often have cheaper services since they are vets in training. They may also be able to provide more specialized services than your local vet.

44) Learn pet first aid so you don’t have to run to the vet for minor injuries. The Red Cross offers a Pet First Aid course (which I’ve taken).

45) If you have multiple pets try buying medications or flea treatments meant for a larger sized animal and break it up. For example a heartworm pill meant for a 60 pound dog could be broken in half for 2, 30 pound dogs.

46) Do your own bathing and grooming. Buy a hand held sprayer for your shower. You can buy clippers to do an all-around trim. Or get a pet that needs minimal grooming!

47) Do your own nail trims. I’ve started using the Pedi-Paw, which I found at CVS.

48) Look into health insurance for your pet, get it while your pet is young before medical issues appear. This is my BIGGEST regret. Had I purchased this when my little lemon was young, I could be a few thousand dollars richer.

49) Try a petsitter or dog walker while you are away, it’s cheaper than boarding. Unless of course your furry friend decides to tear up their couch and chairs and you have to re-purchase new furniture for your petsitter.

50) Brush your pet’s teeth regularly to avoid expensive dental cleanings later. I find late at night to be the best time to get in and scrub the doggies teeth.

Free One-Year Subscription to Glamour?

Unfortunately, no. In my previous blog, I mentioned to find a coupon in the recent issue of Glamour Magazine and that my subscription was free. After looking back, it was NOT free. BUT, I found a deal that may be the closest to getting it free...

To celebrate Glamour’s 70th birthday, they’re giving away one-year subscriptions for just $1.50. If you’re interested, hop on this one, since the offer is only good through March 15th.

The Best Prices on Meat and Dairy

Here is the chart I referred to in 'My First Kroger Experience' posting...

And as I go along, I will add 'most used' items to this list so I know when I come across a good deal to stock up on that item!

My first Kroger experience

Well, I drove down to Bourbonnais today to get my first Kroger experience. The first thing I noticed was the hours on the door (open 24/7)...pretty cool. The cleanliness of the store amazed me (guess that's what I get for living in Matteson).

My first stop was the Customer Service counter to get a card. Not only were they prompt an helpful, but they were friendly and SMILING! Call me crazy, but I don't get that too often these days.

Second stop was the produce section...and the realization that I had last week's shopping list. Trust me when I say, I was LIVID! Although, when I looked up and saw Bananas on sale for $0.18 per pound, I decided to still take a look around.

Third stop was the meat department. I made myself a little 'chart' that I refer to when I go in the meat department that tells me what price a good sale is versus a great sale (since I will never pay retail again). I have a 25 Cubic Foot deep freezer in my basement that can more-than hold meat until we're ready to eat it. Well, they had the chicken breasts on sale for $0.97 per pound...THAT'S UNHEARD OF! Damn right, I purchased 10lbs. Jason knows every way to Tuesday how to make chicken with all the different seasonings, breaded, in salad, etc. YIPPEE!

They had their 10 for $10 sale, which isn't out of the ordinary (since every grocery store does it), but the key thing here was that they double coupons. Since Jason and I LOOOOOVE the Pillsbury Buttermilk Grands Biscuits, I picked them up for $1 each, used a $0.30 coupon on each (which doubled to $0.60), so I got ten of these for $4.00...ONLY $0.40 EACH! BUT THAT'S NOT ALL! When I went to check out, the woman said for every 4 I purchase, I get $3 off. So, since I had 10, I got a total of $6...which made all 10 of the biscuits FREE...WITH A $2.00 PROFIT!!!

Anyway, the trip didn't turn out to be a TOTAL waste of time, but there is one last thing I'd like to mention about Kroger's. For every 'green' bag you use at checkout, they give you a $0.05 credit. I know its not much, but I keep a bunch of these in the trunk and brought in 5 of them. I just keep on winning them from here...http://www.rightathome.com/default.aspx

So, now that I have the PROPER SALES AD, I'll report next time on sales, deals, and other whatnots from Kroger.

Until then...

Plan for the Worse in a Recession

Did anyone happen to catch the Lisa Ling special report on Oprah recently? Lisa Ling traveled to her hometown of Sacramento, and investigated tent cities - small communities of people who are living in tents year-round because they are otherwise homeless. Most of these people are homeless due to job loss and/or foreclosure, and many of them are also spending most of their time looking for a job. One woman, who had been living in a tent city with her husband for almost a year, spoke about missing amenities others take for granted. "Taking a shower when I want, walking into my bathroom, turning the light on. Fixing my hair and doing my makeup," she says. "I miss looking like a girl." At a shelter, Lisa Ling also interviewed a mother and her three children who bounce from shelter to shelter with their only belongings held by a black trash bag. On the weekend days, when the shelter is closed, they are forced to wander the streets.

It's a sad story, and unfortunately, for many, it's a reality. What really shocked me is that these people were middle class citizens only months ago. In the blink of an eye, everything changed.

One particular woman had been hunting for a job for two years. Prior to that, she had been making $70,000 a year. When asked what she would do if she could change one thing, she replied, "For me, the saving is huge. You have to have something that you can fall back on. Even if it's six months holding you stable down the line—that may be all you need."

She admitted to spending more than she should have, and that she wishes she had saved more money when she could. This just proves that the problem with many of us isn't how much, or even how little we make. It's how much we are spending. No matter what amount of money we are making, we're always wishing for 'just a little more.' We are living out of, or barely within, our means. We need to try to learn to live below our means, no matter our income. In this economy, anything can happen. It's smart to be prepared for the worst. None of the people interviewed in Lisa Ling's report expected that they would be where they are. Like most of us, they thought it could never happen to them.

It's extremely important to start building an emergency fund. Most sources say to aim for six months of living expenses, but that can be daunting. Start with smaller goals. Create a budget, and cut expenses if you have to. Have money taken out of your account automatically each month and transferred into a high-interest account. Just do something. You don't want to be the person who's homeless and jobless, wishing they had saved more of their money.

Start a budget, talk to someone about saving - please, please, please take action now.

I just heard someone in the line at the store yesterday say she JUST heard of 1-800-FREE-411. EEK! I have been using that for YEARS! So, if you don't already use it, PROGRAM IT IN YOUR PHONE NOW! Paid 411 calls can cost up to $3.00 for every call you make (depending on the carrier) and 1-800-FREE-411 provides listings for free! They're free because they are ad supported meaning the consumer hears two, 10 second audio advertisements while we get the number they request. Usually, the ads are highly interactive with the consumer (sometimes offering promotions or discounts) and are geared toward the listing request! Next time you need some info, you can get it for free!!

FREE Bridal Guide Magazine

Bridal Magazines are hazardous to everyone.

1) The environment - Those are thick suckers, you know how many trees you kill for one of them? And four or five of them is like a redwood!

2) The bride/bridesmaid’s back - They’re so thick and heavy that the girl who’s carrying them around is certainly going to feel it. And no one wants to marry someone who has bad posture, especially if its from carrying these around.

3) Men - Its dangerous to men's wallets for women to see all of these future ideas that their money will go to. Because in 5 years from now, the fact that the bride had calla lilies and irises in your bouquet will mean nothing.

4) The purse - Dangerous to women’s pocketbooks too, seeing how much they have to spend for just one of them, much less the two redwoods worth of them that they’ll need for all of the info they never cared about till that rock was on their finger.

I guess its a good thing that you can get this free Bridal Guide magazine issue, then. One less thing to worry about buying and another Big Mac you can eat–or shouldn’t eat so you can fit into that dress…

Pet Contests

Believe it or not there are several contest you can enter your pet in beyond "World's Cutest Dog".

*This Friday I am running volunteering at a local shelter. They give out prizes for best costume including one for your pet. By dressing up my pup, I could win $100 dollars! Now, I will not be doing this for several reasons including that my dog would destroy any attempts to costume him. However, it presents an opportunity to make $100 dollars while having fun.

*Bissell is currently running a Most Valuable Pet Photo Contest. Go here for the details. You could win your choice of bissell product, your pet's picture on their packaging and 10,000 donated to a charity of your favorite pet cause.

*Dogster is a dog resources website that is sort of like a dog version of Myspace. You can create your pup a profile and make friends with other dogs. Another great aspect of this site though is the abudnant resources on it. You can find information on breeds, adoption sites, forums, and the list goes on. They also have contests. Earlier this year I joined a Febreeze group and got the cutest little pack of items for my pet including a portable water bowl and food scoop.

While your pet will probably never make you rich or be the next Lassie. You can still find cute contests to enter them into and win fun prizes. After all, why not?
